Creature Name: Spore Spawn (spore spawn)
Height: 2.3-4.2 m (core)
Mass: 500 kg
Homeworld: Zebes

Spore spawn is not actually a single organism. Instead, it is a colony of symbiotic plants. Each individual plant fulfills a specific role within the system. Some plants are chemosynthetic, some transport nutrients throughout the system, some grow armor plates to protect the rest, some transmit information, some allow for movement, and some produce spores. The individual plants that make up Spore Spawn behave very much like individual tissues and organs in most other plants and animals on Zebes. The spores that give Spore Spawn its name are produced by specialized creatures near the core. They float through the air and eventually land. Where they land they grow, connecting themselves to the rest of Spore Spawn and thus expanding the group. The new growths automatically detect what specific type of plant is needed and grow into that form. Although the organisms are separate, their genetic structures are identical to one another. The spores are thus capable of forming whatever structure is needed. Spore spawn has expanded quite a bit; it presently covers a large portion of the Brinstar that was once covered by pink moss.

The most important part of Spore Spawn is the regulatory center, made up of a number of highly specialized plants. This, in effect, is Spore Spawn's brain. It manages all aspects of Spore Spawn's biology. Without the brain, the individual organisms would have no idea what to do. Food would stop being produced, nutrients would stop being transported, growth would halt, and the whole colony would quickly die. For this reason specialized, heavily armored plants form a pair of hemispherical shells that guard the core. However, the core needs a great deal of nutrients. The food produced elsewhere in Spore Spawn are insufficient to feed the core. The core needs to be exposed to the air every so often so it can feed on the chemicals that permeate Brinstar's atmosphere. When the core is open to "breath", it is vulnerable to predators. For this reason the core is on a movable stalk. When the core senses an intruder into its chamber, it attempts to crush the intruder to prevent it from having a change to harm the core.
