The similarity is useful for recognition but does not prove a direct developmental relationship. The aquatic body is a complete adaptation in its own right.
In water, a radial defense changes meaning. A projection or discharge does not simply leave the body; it interacts with drag, pressure, and conductive suspended material. Depthorn therefore converts a small animal into a local current hazard, using Burenia's water column to carry the effect farther and less predictably than a dry-air thorncaster could manage.
Anatomy And Physiology
The body remains stable in water through a balance of propulsion, buoyancy, and short corrective movements. Rather than relying on four wings, it appears to use a shape that can remain pointed into the current while keeping defensive structures facing outward. Observed electrical arcs around the body suggest a conductive surface system, though the exact organs responsible remain unresolved.
The comparison to Nailong is strongest at the defensive edge: both animals present a compact center surrounded by structures that discourage close approach. Their internal solutions are likely different. A flying Nailong must stabilize a projectile volley against open air; a Depthorn must avoid grounding or dispersing its own charge through water before it becomes useful.
Habitat And Range
Burenia's flooded chambers provide the depth, mineral-rich water, and vertical surfaces that suit Depthorn. It is most likely to be encountered near boundaries between still pools and narrow channels, where a stationary animal can use an incoming current to carry cues toward its sensory structures without being swept away.
The presence of a stored specimen in Hanubia indicates that its aquatic defense was considered notable enough for controlled retention. That does not make it artificial. Instead, it suggests that a native Burenia trait had practical value to observers who were collecting unusual ZDR organisms for study or future use.
Behavior And Ecology
Depthorn is a volume-holder. It does not need a large territory if it can make one water gap difficult to cross. The animal remains near a stable current boundary, responds when its sensory field is disturbed, and relies on the water to distribute the consequence. That pattern is a sensible answer to Burenia's dense, three-dimensional aquatic routes.
A local population would influence how smaller swimmers use a reservoir. Drift fauna can remain in its wake, while more vulnerable animals avoid the front and sides of the defended volume. This makes Depthorn a subtle organizer of Burenia movement: not an apex predator, but an organism that determines where other bodies can safely pass.
Reproduction And Development
Direct developmental observations are limited. The water-adapted body makes small juveniles difficult to separate from debris, and any early electrical capability could be too weak to see against Burenia's reflective water. The most useful future evidence would be repeated small bodies positioned near an adult-sized individual at the same current boundary.
The animal should remain separate from Nailong until anatomy or breeding evidence demonstrates more than superficial resemblance. A similar defensive role can evolve in different media without one species being a juvenile, variant, or mutation of the other. Preserving that distinction keeps the file useful when later observations refine the relationship.
