Overview

Dizzeans are small jellyfish-like organisms native to the flooded areas of Artaria, Burenia, and one Ferenia water route. A single body is weak and visually simple, but the species seldom operates as a single body. It collects in dense smacks that occupy a whole passage layer, converting ordinary swimming space into a shifting biological barrier.

The swarm is the defense. Each animal drifts with limited individual authority, yet the group can fill a corridor, close around a disturbance, and make repeated contact unavoidable. This is not a predator's deliberate pursuit. It is a collective response that becomes dangerous because the water gives the crowd nowhere to disperse quickly.

Anatomy And Physiology

The body resembles a small gelatinous bell or sac, adapted for buoyancy and short pulsing movement. Soft tissue allows a Dizzean to change shape slightly as the swarm compresses, keeping the group from breaking apart when it passes through a constricted channel. The cost is fragility: an individual has little armor and depends on surrounding bodies for protection.

A swarm arrangement can substitute for complex anatomy. Many small bodies create overlapping sensory fields, absorb minor impacts that would disrupt one organism, and confuse a larger animal's sense of where the open water begins. The species therefore invests in number, spacing, and persistence rather than in a single powerful organ.

Habitat And Range

Dizzeans favor water volumes large enough to hold a group but narrow enough that the group can influence passage. Artaria's flooded cavities, Burenia's large reservoirs, and Ferenia's isolated water routes all provide different versions of this geometry. The shared requirement is a current slow enough for a soft-bodied swarm to remain together.

A healthy swarm will occupy the middle or edge of a current rather than cling to the bottom. Its position changes with temperature, suspended food, and disturbance from larger bodies. Mapping that depth is useful because a school at one level can leave a second level clear, while a compressed group can abruptly deny both.

Behavior And Ecology

Dizzeans drift, pulse, and regroup. They do not need to chase food actively if the water brings fine particles and microfauna through the swarm. Their contact behavior is a byproduct of this density: when a larger animal enters the same layer, the group may still continue forward and overwhelm the available space.

The species is a basic trophic link in ZDR water. It turns suspended material into gelatinous biomass, feeds larger aquatic organisms, and gives other animals an immediate read on current conditions. The later X presence did not visibly erase the swarm pattern, showing that the native collective behavior remained useful even when the bodies were altered.

Reproduction And Development

No fixed spawning site has been confirmed. A small juvenile may be nearly impossible to separate from a particulate glow or a tiny adult at field distance, especially within a dense group. The best evidence would be a seasonal band of smaller bodies gathered in sheltered water rather than a single loose swarm crossing a main shaft.

Development likely depends on current stability. A fragile early stage needs water calm enough to retain it but connected enough to bring food. The same protected side pools that support Lum Ell and small fish may therefore act as nursery ground for Dizzeans before they join the larger passage-bound smacks.
