Overview

The Cloaked Trooper is a Space Pirate close-assault specialist developed for the Bermuda System campaign. A personal camouflage field removes the armored wearer from the normal visual spectrum while the trooper closes to scythe range. The unit is documented at the Talvania installation where Pirate camouflage work was exposed and aboard the Doomseye during the Operation Golem task force's final infiltration. Talvania is not its confirmed species origin, and nothing supports innate invisibility, Phazon mutation, Ing possession, or Aeion use. What disappeared in the corridor was a trained Pirate carrying a machine.

When visible, the Cloaked Trooper presents the same heavy form associated with the Bermuda campaign's Elite Troopers. That visual resemblance does not make the two interchangeable. The Elite configuration holds ground through armor, direct pressure, and obvious presence; the Cloaked Trooper uses the expectation of an empty route to move that same kind of close-combat mass into striking distance. Its weapon, protection, and body remain important, but the true instrument is the opponent's decision to advance before confirming that the route is clear.

An Old Requirement, Rebuilt

Pirate stealth infantry existed long before Talvania. Shadow Pirates on Tallon IV carried power-intensive cloaks and relied upon melee weapons. Later Pirate Commandos combined concealment with Phazite armor, teleportation, boost movement, and Phazon-powered weapons. The Cloaked Trooper is neither class under another name. It belongs to a later program with a narrower identity: normal-spectrum concealment, a scythe, and direct approach.

Talvania's engineers inherited a military problem rather than one unchanged device: field stability had to be balanced against power draw, armor, weapons discharge, and the soldier's behavior. After Phaaze fell, concealment independent of Phazon let the Horde preserve an unseen attacker without rebuilding the corruption infrastructure that had placed its military under Dark Samus. The Talvania project became recovery, redesign, and an institutional refusal to surrender a capability because earlier versions had been lost.

Talvania's Camouflage Program

The Talvania installation was more than an infantry armory. Recovered Architect devices showed that its advanced camouflage work was associated with the Doomseye. The Cloaked Trooper's personal field was the program's infantry expression: proof that emitters could suppress the visible signature of moving armor before related work was committed to a strategic vessel. Joints, blade housings, and changing posture supplied data no stationary screen could produce.

Science personnel calibrated field geometry, armament offices restricted destabilizing equipment, occupation forces supplied candidates, and intelligence officers tested detectable habits. This distributed arrangement protected the program from one laboratory's failure but encouraged secrecy between departments. Talvania therefore guarded not only hardware but the Architect units carrying the project's accumulated work.

Selection Beneath the Armor

Cloaked Trooper candidates came from personnel reliable at short range. A wearer had to move without easy sight of its own extremities, avoid allies who could not see it, and resist attacking merely because surprise was available. Selection favored patience, spatial memory, controlled footwork, and aggression disciplined enough to preserve the approach. Poor candidates either announced themselves through contact or remained hidden until the opportunity passed.

Visible similarity to Elite Troopers reflects compatible armor and body requirements, not proof that every Cloaked Trooper held that rank first. The shared frame gave technicians known dimensions for tuning emitters and let crews reuse armor fixtures, scythe mounts, and maintenance stands. The cloak made the configuration exceptional; the body remained part of the Pirate military's established personnel base.

The Personal Cloak

The field suppresses the wearer in the normal spectrum, not its mass or interaction with the environment. A cloaked trooper still depresses flooring, brushes cables, opens doors, displaces dust, and occupies space. It succeeds because combatants trust vision first and because brief uncertainty at an intersection surrenders the distance the unit needs.

Field stability demanded precise fitting. A pattern calibrated to one silhouette could fray around an altered shoulder plate or poorly seated blade housing. Technicians treated replacement panels as optical components, checking the cloak through movement cycles rather than only at rest. Its apparent simplicity concealed Talvania workshops, Architect records, inspection rigs, and operators trained to recognize distortion before an enemy did.

The Scythe and the Deliberate Absence of Firepower

No long-range weapon is documented, and weapons from Pirate Commandos or ordinary troopers should not be assigned to it. A rifle adds power demand, external geometry, ammunition handling, and a discharge that identifies the firing point. The scythe stayed close to the armor, remained useful after exposure, and matched a mission in which the cloak delivered the soldier to effective range.

That choice created dependency: a trooper unable to close had no recorded means of exchanging fire. Doctrine placed the unit in interior approaches, machinery lanes, storage routes, and access points where walls restricted observation. Conventional troops supplied fire and forced movement; the cloaked element occupied the route the opposition believed remained open. It was a concealed edge inside a larger formation.

Training the False Absence

Training chambers used clutter, turns, reflective surfaces, and friendly traffic. Candidates crossed illuminated machinery without producing interruption, passed doors before their cycle betrayed a second user, and halted when an ally entered the same space. They counted steps and memorized architecture because the cloak reduced their own visual references. Scythe drills emphasized one decisive opening followed by movement, since exposure ended the illusion of an empty corridor.

Group spacing was equally strict. Two cloaked soldiers could collide or reveal one another, while one advancing beside overt infantry risked friendly fire. Controllers assigned approach lanes and release conditions before contact. The cloak remained useful for repositioning after combat began, but its greatest advantage had been spent. The configuration rewarded preparation over improvisation.

M13: Phantom

The Talvania program was compromised during M13: Phantom. The Operation Golem task force entered a Pirate facility to recover three Architect storage devices. When the Architects' autonomous evasion protocols activated, the Marines had to disable and carry them toward extraction while Pirate Troopers and Cloaked Troopers attacked. The setting gave the stealth unit every intended advantage: interior routes, divided Marine attention, valuable mobile data, and an enemy slowed by retrieval duties.

The defense nevertheless failed. The Operation Golem task force removed all three Architects, and analysis of their contents revealed the advanced camouflage project connected to the Doomseye. This was a more consequential loss than the Cloaked Troopers destroyed during the extraction. A concealed soldier protects secrecy only while the system that made it remains hidden; Talvania lost operators, prototypes, and the records that allowed the Federation to understand why the facility mattered. High Command continued the program, but it no longer possessed strategic surprise.

The Doomseye Deployment

Cloaked Troopers later served aboard the Doomseye during M22: Convergence, when the Operation Golem task force penetrated the vessel to disable its force-field generator. The warship's interior was an ideal defensive environment for personal camouflage: narrow passages, machinery, pressure doors, and repeated transitions between apparently secured compartments. Here the troopers were not experimental guards. They were part of the mature crew-defense system protecting the culmination of the camouflage work uncovered on Talvania.

The deployment also exposed the limit of stealth at strategic scale. Cloaked infantry could turn a corridor into an ambush, but they could not restore a defense already penetrated by disciplined mechanized troops, rescue the compromised generator, or preserve the Doomseye once its shield fell. The Operation Golem task force fought through the ship, defeated its command systems, and escaped with Samus Aran's aid before the Federation fleet destroyed the vessel. No complete roster survived to establish whether every Cloaked Trooper was aboard, and the class should not be declared extinct; its best-documented development site and most important known deployment were nevertheless compromised in the same campaign.

Distinction from Other Cloaked Pirates

Federation indexing must keep three related ideas separate. A Shadow Pirate is a Tallon IV stealth trooper whose cloak consumed enough power to force melee-only combat. A Pirate Commando is a Phazon-era elite with Phazite protection, ranged weapons, and movement systems not documented in the Bermuda configuration. A Cloaked Trooper is the Talvania-derived scythe unit observed in Operation Golem task force operations. Historical knowledge may have passed between Pirate science offices, but continuity of purpose is not identity of hardware.

The Bermuda unit likewise should not be treated as a creature made invisible by Bion biology. Pirate forces used Bion-derived amplification broadly during the campaign, yet the Cloaked Trooper designation describes equipment and doctrine. The surviving record does not isolate the enlargement history of every wearer, and nothing about the cloak requires a transformed species. Its defining alteration was the field around the soldier, not an invisible organ inside it.

Countermeasure Doctrine

The correct response is to deny the approach rather than wait for a silhouette. Teams should preserve overlapping distance, observe doors and loose material, vary movement timing, and cover the route most useful to a melee attacker. Indirect disturbances matter because the cloak hides reflected light from the wearer, not the physical consequences of passage. Fire should not be concentrated upon a guessed point so completely that another approach is abandoned. The trooper wins when anxiety produces the separation it was trained to exploit.

Once exposed, the unit remains dangerous but comprehensible: an armored Pirate with a scythe and no documented standoff armament. Maintaining distance removes the central advantage around which its training was constructed. Recovery of emitter fragments is a secondary priority after the route is secured, since a damaged field can still reveal power architecture, calibration tolerances, and whether surviving High Command offices retained the means to reproduce Talvania's work.

Legacy

The Cloaked Trooper represented one of the Horde's more disciplined adaptations. It did not rely upon a larger body, heavier projectile, or unstable mutagen. It weaponized incomplete information. Talvania's scientists turned absence into an infantry position, and the Doomseye's commanders placed that position wherever an intruder would be tempted to trust ordinary sight.

Its failure was therefore institutional rather than trivial. The Pirates protected a strategic camouflage program with soldiers whose advantage depended upon the enemy not understanding the program, then allowed its Architect records to be carried out of Talvania. By the time the same class defended the Doomseye, the Federation knew concealment was central to the operation and had already defeated the unit under extraction pressure. The Cloaked Trooper remained lethal, but its secret had become doctrine, and doctrine can be trained against. Its lasting lesson is not that an invisible enemy is invulnerable. It is that the most dangerous Pirate in a facility may be the one whose assigned position appears to contain nothing at all.
