The Proboscum is a malfunctioning Chozo worker robot clinging to the cavern wall of SR388 Phase 4 outside the ruined settlement. Its large proboscis-like appendage gives the machine its name and its original function: the arm can extend outward as a temporary support surface in a vertical construction or access environment.

The machine is not a combat unit. It was built for labor, and its present danger comes from mechanical failure rather than aggression. The degraded control system cannot keep the long arm level for more than a brief interval, causing it to flick downward and remove support from anything that has been using it as a platform.

Proboscum is surviving Chozo infrastructure in a faulty state. It reveals how workers once moved materials and personnel through SR388's high cavern walls, using a temporary support surface where a permanent bridge or floor was impractical. Within the deep shaft systems, that ability would have connected a vertical work face without permanently filling the cavern with scaffolding.

Worker Architecture

The body is designed to cling to stone while the long front appendage reaches outward from the wall. That geometry is appropriate for a labor machine operating where a conventional floor is absent or interrupted by a vertical shaft. The arm can hold a level orientation long enough to create a temporary passage point, then loses stability as the malfunction asserts itself.

The Proboscum shares a Chozo machine context with other SR388 units, including the TPO and the more obviously defensive Gunzoo. TPO and Proboscum are work-oriented forms, while Gunzoo is designed around security. The contrast preserves the infrastructure logic that connected their different jobs. A wall-clinging arm gives the Proboscum a task no floor-bound carrier or fixed turret can perform.

Fault Cycle And Risk

The defining malfunction is repetitive rather than random. The support arm lowers, remains usable for a short interval, then snaps downward. That cycle is dangerous near a spiked or deep wall because a person may commit to the support before the fault becomes visible. The hazard is environmental leverage, not impact force from the machine itself.

Map the possible lower surfaces, identify where an arm drop would direct a load, and determine whether the machine can be observed without using it as a climb aid. The nearby Shirk and Autom patterns add a second layer to that environment. One machine guards, one performs regular labor, and one has degraded into unreliable support. Recording them together gives a clearer picture of the site than removing the Proboscum from its wall and treating it as an autonomous artifact.
