Overview

The Preed is a Space Pirate patrol bioform documented in the Torvus Bog region of Aether. Its body remains buoyant above the ground while mechanical fittings keep it useful as a controlled security organism. The result is neither a conventional drone nor an unmodified local animal: it is a living pressure body adapted into a mobile patrol asset.

Its most important characteristic is the Nohadin gas held within the outer body. When that body is ruptured, the gas escapes as a dangerous cloud. The Preed therefore forces an awkward response from anyone moving through a confined passage. Disabling it at close range may remove the immediate collision threat while contaminating the same airspace that a team must cross next.

The natural lineage beneath the cybernetic changes is uncertain. Its rounded proportions resemble those of Aetherian gas floaters such as the Puffer, but resemblance does not establish a direct genetic relationship or a documented fusion process. What is clear is the operational state: the Preed has been altered and deployed for Pirate patrol work.

Pressure Body And Patrol Use

The Preed uses a buoyant, gas-filled body to navigate routes above mud, shallow water, broken grating, and other inconvenient surfaces in Torvus Bog. Cybernetic hardware turns that natural or semi-natural flotation into a predictable patrol pattern, allowing the creature to occupy a corridor without needing legs, rails, or a large hover platform. The body stays small enough to pass through spaces that would not accept a larger machine.

This physical arrangement also explains why its patrol role is inseparable from its hazard. The same pressure volume that keeps it aloft contains the Nohadin gas that becomes dangerous after rupture. A Preed is not simply carrying a separate canister; its mobility, body shape, and post-destruction cloud are parts of one altered system.

Nohadin Cloud

Nohadin is the operational reason to take a Preed seriously. The gas cloud expands into the immediate route after the body fails, changing visibility, breathing conditions, and the timing of any rescue or recovery action. In a broad outdoor bog, the hazard may disperse more readily; in a Pirate corridor, ventilation and door state can preserve it exactly where it has the greatest tactical value.

For that reason, a Preed sighting should trigger a route survey before engagement. Identify ceiling vents, secondary exits, pressure doors, and the direction of air movement. The response is not to assign a food web or a reproductive cycle to the animal, but to understand the infrastructure that lets a modified gas organism become a local contamination weapon.

Related Forms And Alteration

The Preed can be compared with nearby Puffer-like organisms and with the more overtly armed Puffer Mine, but those comparisons should remain structural. Shared inflation, flotation, or gas storage do not prove that one is the parent form of another. The Preed is defined by its Space Pirate modification and by its patrol behavior, not by a speculative family tree.

A different transformation occurs in the Dark Preed, where the same basic cybernetic body is altered by Darkling possession. Keeping the standard Preed distinct from that form is essential. The base organism represents Pirate deployment on Aether; the dark form represents what happens when that already unstable security body is taken over by a separate hostile force.
