Overview

The Dark Preed is a Preed placed under Darkling control in the dark-world regions of Aether. It retains the buoyant pressure body and Pirate-installed fittings of the standard form, but the possession changes its durability, movement behavior, and toxic aftermath. The result is an altered patrol organism designed by neither of its contributing systems alone.

Its documented routes run through Dark Agon Wastes, Dark Torvus Bog, and the Ing Hive, where aerial movement can exploit vertical shafts, dark ceiling space, and restrictive corridors. It is used as a hunting presence rather than a stationary guard. The body closes distance from above or across a gap, then remains dangerous after defeat because the internal gas is released into the same confined environment.

The purple Nohadin cloud is the clearest material difference from the standard Preed. It is larger, persists longer, and accompanies a creature that is more durable under attack. Describing this change only as a generic energy effect would miss the operational fact: possession modifies the preexisting gas-hazard body into a more difficult containment problem.

Possession State

The Dark Preed should be classified as an altered state, not a separate naturally breeding species. A Darkling takes control of a Preed that already contains Pirate cybernetics and a pressurized toxic reservoir. The resulting behavior combines its inherited flight system with a new hostile command structure, producing a body that can move independently through dark-world routes without relying on its original Pirate handlers.

This distinction matters when examining remains. The mechanical fittings belong to the base Preed design, while the enhanced resilience and altered gas response belong to the possession. Removing one layer from the description makes the animal seem either purely engineered or purely supernatural; the field reality is that the Darkling acts through an existing cybernetic gas organism.

Aerial Routes In The Dark World

Dark-world terrain favors the Dark Preed's aerial movement. Broken walkways, deep voids, and poorly illuminated vertical spaces let the unit approach from lines that a ground patrol could not use. It does not need a fully open chamber to remain mobile, only enough volume to maintain its pressure-body drift and turn around structures or through a shaft.

The route pattern also separates it from the Space Pirates that originally modified the base organism. Pirate installations provide the body and some of the accessible spaces, but the altered form answers to the Ing threat environment. Its occupation of a passage indicates an active possession network, not merely abandoned Pirate security.

Purple Cloud And Containment

The purple gas release should be evaluated as an area-control event. A larger, longer-lasting cloud can close a ladder, a narrow bridge, or an exit long after the body itself is gone. A direct approach that would be acceptable against a standard Preed may leave a team trapped against the environment with no clean route around the plume.

Dark-world equipment such as the Dark Suit may improve survivability in hostile conditions, but it does not erase the need to map the cloud before moving. Ventilation, height, and retreat direction remain more useful than an assumption that the body is harmless once it is no longer in flight.
