The Watch Drone is a Luminoth-built perimeter construct recognizable by its three jointed support legs, rounded central housing, and refusal to abandon a designated route for long. Units documented in the ruined defensive network on Aether were built to hold key approaches rather than range freely through an installation. Their compact form lets them brace across narrow corridors and uneven ruins where a larger platform would lose purchase.
Its most important behavior is obstruction rather than pursuit. A Watch Drone remains fixed across a passage until confronted with sufficiently bright light, then withdraws along the route required to clear that passage. When the illumination fades, the same unit gradually returns to its former resting point. This repeatable cycle makes the construct a useful record of former security priorities even where the surrounding Luminoth architecture has collapsed.
Many surviving examples operate under the influence of the Ing, which has redirected a protective system into a selective barrier within contested territory. The corruption changes allegiance and access conditions without erasing the underlying light-response behavior. That combination of durable Luminoth engineering and compromised command logic is what distinguishes the Watch Drone from a mobile patrol machine or a fixed turret.
Construction And Post Geometry
The core housing is a closed spherical assembly mounted above a three-point walking frame. Each leg provides both support and rotational leverage, allowing the machine to settle close to the floor, raise itself over debris, or pivot within the limited width of a stone passage. The Ing did not need to redesign the Watch Drone to make it useful. By corrupting an existing Luminoth guardian, they acquired a silent unit that could control traffic through Dark Aether without depending on a nearby living sentry. The construct's former role already favored confinement, route separation, and delayed access, all of which serve an occupying force that understands the terrain.
Corruption is most evident in the places a unit now prevents access to, not in any obvious structural alteration. A drone may still react to light exactly as a Luminoth device would, yet hold a corridor whose strategic value has shifted entirely. This makes it necessary to distinguish original construction from present operator influence when cataloging the machine. The chassis is Luminoth; the operational consequence is often Ing-controlled.
Field Implications
A Watch Drone changes an expedition plan by controlling timing instead of inflicting direct damage. Personnel who clear a route with light must account for the return interval if they intend to bring equipment, evacuate a casualty, or maintain a survey line behind them. A team that advances through a newly opened corridor and lets its illumination lapse may find its return path closed by the same unit before the surrounding terrain can be remapped.
The construct is also a useful indicator of surviving infrastructure. Because it stays attached to a post assignment, a functioning drone can mark an otherwise hidden connection between Luminoth rooms, defense sectors, or power-access routes. Correlating multiple Watch Drone positions with the nearby Luminoth ruins produces a more reliable picture of how the original settlement separated civilian circulation from protected approaches.
