The Dark Splinter is an Ing-possessed form of the native Splinter of Aether. It is not a separate natural lineage. Possession leaves the basic insectoid body recognizable while making the host more durable and more dangerous in close contact.

The distinction matters because much of the original Splinter behavior survives. Individuals still emerge from protected spaces, lunge at nearby organisms, and contribute to a wider group response. What changes is the force and resilience behind that pattern, together with the influence of the occupying Ing presence.

The record is most useful where possession and habitat overlap. Dark Splinter activity shows how a local Aether species could be converted into a persistent threat during the wider conflict between the Luminoth and the Ing, without requiring unsupported claims about a separate army, a fixed migration route, or a complete host-production program.

Anatomy And Physiology

The possessed animal retains the hard carapace, low body, lunging limbs, and close-range mouthparts of an unaltered Splinter. Dark coloration and altered surface material should be treated as possession evidence rather than as a replacement body plan.

Ing influence increases endurance and impact potential without removing the host's physical constraints. The body still relies on a short lunge and direct contact; it is not transformed into a long-range or highly agile organism merely because the possession state makes it harder to stop.

High-luminosity exposure is an important field condition because it can disrupt the advantages associated with the dark form. That sensitivity should be documented alongside carapace samples and local light conditions, rather than reduced to a generic claim that all bright environments are safe.

Habitat And Range

Documented Dark Splinter activity is concentrated in the Temple Grounds, Great Temple approaches, and Dark Agon Wastes of Aether. These locations combine former Splinter habitat with the spaces most strongly affected by Ing occupation.

Cocoon clusters, disturbed ground, shed carapace, and multiple short lunge marks are stronger habitat indicators than a single dark shape at a distance. A quiet passage can contain a group below or behind the visible surface, particularly where an unaltered Splinter colony already had protected emergence sites.

Do not treat portal proximity as proof that a Dark Splinter has crossed between environmental states. It may simply be using adjacent shelter. Its known range should be mapped from direct signs of the host body and possession, not from assumed strategic intent.

Behavior And Ecology

Dark Splinters retain the host species' group-oriented response. A disturbance near one individual can be followed by a wider emergence or lunge sequence, which is why cocoon sites and vibration should be considered together during a field assessment.

The possessed form is more resilient than a baseline Splinter and more difficult to drive off by ordinary contact. It remains a close-range animal, however. Its main advantage is the ability to sustain the host's direct attack pattern under conditions that would normally break or scatter an unpossessed group.

Dietary records are incomplete. No reliable list of preferred prey should be inferred from the presence of nearby fauna or battlefield debris. The ecological consequence that is clear is route disruption: a darkened Splinter group can make an emergence corridor unsafe for the smaller organisms and personnel that would otherwise use it.

Reproduction And Development

A Dark Splinter develops when an existing Splinter is occupied by an Ing presence. It is therefore a possession state, not a new reproductive line. Continued occurrence depends on the availability of ordinary Splinter hosts and compatible conditions for occupation.

Group hierarchy can survive possession when a dominant host is involved, but detailed command behavior has not been recovered well enough to treat every cluster as a disciplined military unit. The more defensible observation is that the dark form can preserve and amplify the host's existing social pressure.

Future comparisons should place unaltered and possessed carapaces, cocoon conditions, and local light exposure side by side. That will clarify how the Ing changes a familiar Aether organism without inventing a migration cycle or a complete host-selection doctrine.
