Overview

Splinters are common predatory insectoids of Aether, concentrated in the Temple Grounds and protected hive passages near the Great Temple. Their ecological identity is inseparable from the cocoon. When not hunting or foraging, an adult secretes a protective enclosure and enters hibernation, allowing a population to occupy walls, ceilings, and hidden chambers without continuously exposing itself in open terrain.

The danger begins when localized seismic disturbance wakes one of those dormant bodies. The awakened Splinter enters a violent response state and emits pheromones that rouse nearby adults. A chamber can therefore change from quiet to crowded through a biological chain reaction rather than an external command signal. This makes the species a particularly clear example of how colony behavior can transform the risk of a place in seconds.

The family record includes larger dominant forms, ordinary hunters, and worker roles that maintain webbing and resources. These are not interchangeable bodies. The alpha form directs the pressure of a pack, ordinary adults supply the immediate leaping response, and workers help keep the protected interior viable. Together they make a hive system that can hunt, rest, and resume activity without relocating the whole colony.

Anatomy And Physiology

A Splinter's body is built for short explosive movement rather than long pursuit. Jointed limbs and a light armored exterior allow it to leap from a cocoon site, cross uneven stone, and close a brief distance before an observer can fully assess the room. The armor is adequate for its ecological niche, but it is not a substitute for the protection supplied by numbers and hidden resting sites.

Cocoon production is the key physiological specialization. The enclosure provides a barrier during hibernation and gives the colony a way to distribute dormant adults through a chamber. Webbing and secreted material are not incidental residue: they create the physical network that holds individuals above the ground and helps define which surfaces can become a sudden emergence point.

Habitat And Range

The Temple Grounds and Great Temple approaches offer the enclosed stonework, overhead structure, and travel corridors that Splinters use most effectively. A cocoon can be placed where it is protected from casual passage but still close enough to a route for an awakened adult to intercept a moving body. The colony's territory is thus a network of waiting positions rather than one visible nest mound.

The same locations carry evidence of Luminoth settlement and later conflict with the Ing. The Luminoth connection is environmental rather than one of deliberate care: Splinters use the ruins and protected spaces left within the temple complex. This makes the animal useful in site assessment because its cocoons identify structures that remain physically stable enough to shelter a long-lived hive.

Behavior And Ecology

The colony's wake response is its defining behavior. A single vibration can become a chemical message, and the message can become a wave of emerging adults. This is why sighting one Splinter does not establish the true population size. The visible specimen may be a scout, a hunter, or the first member of a nearby group to have been roused.

Ing possession produces the Dark Splinter form, which retains the underlying insectoid body while making it more durable and hostile. That altered state must be distinguished from ordinary colony frenzy. One is a native group response triggered by disturbance; the other is a host conversion connected to the wider Ing occupation of Aether's biological and built environment.

Reproduction And Development

The presence of worker and dominant forms indicates a structured colony life cycle, but the exact route from brood to specialized adult has not been directly recovered. Cocoon sites and webbing provide the strongest developmental evidence because they mark persistent protected areas rather than transient hunting paths. The colony clearly invests in interior maintenance as well as outward predation.

A Splinter population should also be assessed alongside records such as the Dark Trooper, which shares parts of the Temple Grounds occupation environment without sharing the same biology. The comparison is useful because it separates native hive persistence from the later possession of available bodies and infrastructure by hostile forces.
